One border crossing with Ukraine and two with Romania are still closed because of the power outage caused by the heavy storm that swept through north-eastern Hungary on Monday afternoon, Gergely Fulop, a regional police spokesman told MTI on Tuesday.
On Monday afternoon a heavy storm with gale-force winds hit Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg county breaking and uprooting trees and seriously damaging power cables.
Fulop said that the Tiszabecs crossing to Ukraine and the Csengersima and Vallaj crossings to Romania are out of operation because of lack of electricity and advised travellers to use the border crossings of Artand to Romania and Zahony, Beregsurany, Barabas or Lonya to Ukraine.
The heavy storm on Monday left 40 towns and villages without electricity in the county. Damages including hundreds of broken rooftops, fallen trees blocking roads, rail-lines and electric cables were reported from at least 39 localities.
Nearly 2,300 homes and 100 other buildings owned by local councils were reported damaged, Sandor Pernyak, a regional disaster management official, told MTI. He said that 94 people have been forced to leave their homes and find temporary shelter due to the storms. There is a blackout in 33 villages, and the water supply has been disrupted in some places, he added.
