French actress Brigitte Bardot, a strong supporter of the animal rights reacted indignant at the decision of the Romanian authorities to change the animal protection law, to allow the euthanasia of some of the stray dogs. In an interview for daily „Adevărul de seară” Brigitte Bardot criticized the Romanian authorities for the “coward and outrageous decision”.
As president of the biggest association for the animal protection in France, Brigitte Bardot visited Romania, for the first time in 1998, to militate for the fate of the stray dogs. She later managed to convince Traian Basescu, the general mayor of the Capital back then, to give up his plan to euthanize the stray dogs in Bucharest and place them in special shelters. "I came twice to Romania in the past years, although I never travel abroad. Then everyone made me beautiful promises, starting with Traian Băsescu, but as soon as I returned to France, the dogs were killed. This country and those who lead it make me sick!” said Brigitte Bardot for „Adevărul de Seară". In Romania, Brigitte Bardot set up a branch of the foundation that bears her name and 22 shelters for the stray dogs. She used to pay for each one of them, monthly, 3,000 Euro. At the beginning of this year, due to the financial crisis, the foundation she leads decided to stop the financing of the 22 shelters. Hundreds of stray dogs were thus in danger to die of starvation or end up in the street. Asked if this time she will comes to Bucharest to talk with the authorities face to face, about the “unpopular measure” they are going to take, the actress said she wants to come, but she is ill. ”My foundation is helping over 20 dog shelters in Romania, delivering every month, food for animals. It’s an enormous amount which we cannot pay forever, as the help brought to Romania is to the disadvantage of other countries with the same issues and same needs.” the actress also said. Bucharest general mayor Sorin Oprescu and the prefect of the Capital, Mihai Cristian Atanasoaei, on Tuesday met with the representatives of five sector city halls for talks regarding the change of the stray dogs law in Bucharest. If the law is changed, the stray dogs are not going to get back on the streets after they are sterilized. Although Sorin Oprescu said solutions will be found to avoid the euthanasia of the animals, but he showed that “the experience of the adoption proved unsuccessful", leaving room for interpretation that the animals will be killed.
