Sunday, 29 November 2009

The Romanian boxer Lucian Bute successfully defended his IBF world championship in the super-middleweight category, by knocking the Mexican boxer Librado Andrade out in the fourth round on Saturday evening (Sunday morning in Romania), during a professional gala that was held at the Colisee Pepsi arena in Quebec in front of a 16,000 strong audience.

Lucian Bute (25-0, 20 KOs) defended his fourth IBF crown and his second one against Librado Andrade (28-3, 21 KOs). Bute had also fought for this title against William Joppy (February 29, 2008), Librado Andrade (October 24, 2008) and Fulgencio Zuniga (March 15, 2009). Bute won the match in Quebec on October 24, 2008, when he defeated Andrade after a controversial final.

After two rounds in which he had the initiative Bute dealt a few blows Andrade felt in the second round and in the fourth round he scored a knockdown when there were 74 seconds left, spinning off the ropes and landing a quick left counter, causing Andrade to fall forward onto all fours.

The match was commented on for the HBO by British Lennox Lewis, former world heavyweight champion.
